85 mph is the nation’s top speed limit.

That’s right, the Lone Star State has made it legal to drive faster than Category 1 hurricane winds. Starting this month, drivers traveling the route between Austin and San Antonio—specifically, Texas State Highway 130—will be hurtling down the road like never before, at a posted speed that only motorists in Abu Dhabi and Poland can legally top. (The rocketeers in Germany don’t count because there is no speed limit on the autobahns.) But who’s going to maintain this stretch of speedway? If the folks at Austin Adopt-a-Highway had a say in the matter, they’d go with sprinter Sanya Richards-Ross, the University of Texas alum and recent Olympic gold medalist. Says AAH representative John Hurt, “We figure she’s fast enough to keep up with traffic.”
