Sleep in Kohler, WI: The American Club

A lot has changed since 1918, when this Tudor-style spread was constructed to house employees of the plumbing manufacturer Kohler. These days, overnighters are attracted to four Pete Dye-designed championship golf courses, a 25,000-square-foot spa that specializes in hydrotherapy, and plush accommodations. (This being the house that Kohler built, every lav has a whirlpool tub.) A three-year renovation was completed in April, but don’t let that keep you indoors: The resort is surrounded by a 500-acre nature preserve and offers genteel pastimes like archery, trap shooting, and horseback riding. Back at home base, treat yourself to beer-battered cheese curds and local craft ales at the cozy Horse & Plow taproom. You’re only an hour north of Brew City after all.
