The James Royal Palm

Four months ago an extraordinary makeover left this South Beach hotel, an Art Deco icon since 1939, with an enticing new identity. Though many of the classic elements—like the lobby’s frosted-glass front desk and sparkling terrazzo floor—have been restored, modern amenities abound, including hybrid-car service and a spa that offers saltwater soaks. Rooms are swathed in soothing oceanic tones, and the maritime vibe continues in the on-site eateries Catch, which specializes in shared plates, and Florida Cookery, which favors authentic Sunshine State cuisine over trend-forward fare. Children and pets are welcome at The James; there’s even a bookshelf of kids’ beach reads. As for Spot? He’ll have to settle for an organic-cotton pet bed and a room-service menu just for dogs.

Beyond the Beach

Settle in for an art house film at The Miami Beach Cinematheque, housed in the former city hall. The space also includes a gallery, bookstore, library, and café.

Listen to a concert at New World Symphony, an orchestral academy that brings top music-program graduates together on one stage. At least once a month the group’s performance is projected onto a 7,000-square-foot wall at SoundScape, the campus’s 2.5-acre park.
