Recruiters spend 6 seconds reviewing your résumé.

Think of all the time you’ve spent tinkering with your résumé—changing fonts, scrutinizing spacing, cramming your career into digestible nuggets. Now imagine a recruiter holding your masterpiece in her hands. In the time it takes to count to six, she’ll have made a decision on the rightness of your résumé for her company’s needs. According to a study by job-matching service TheLadders—which used eye-tracking technology to gauge the focus of hiring pros—that’s how long you have to make an impression with your vita. To maximize those moments, “choose a layout with visual hierarchy that clearly highlights measurable accomplishments,” says Will Evans, the company’s head of user experience. And leave out that snapshot of yourself from 10 years and 20 pounds ago. “Photos distract recruiters,” Evans adds. You want them dazzled by your
experience, not your pearly whites.
