53% of dogs are overweight.

That adds up to 41.1 million pudgy pups nationwide, according to research from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Looks like Fido needs to lay off the Milk-Bones. Not surprisingly, lack of exercise and 24/7 food access are also to blame. Excess weight increases the risk of health problems, including osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes. The good news is there are simple ways to tip the scale in favor of man’s best friend. “Most owners don’t know how much they should be feeding their pet,” says Dr. Ernie Ward, APOP founder and author of Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs Are Getting Fatter. “The biggest weapon we have in the fight against pet obesity is a measuring cup.” With a little patience, less of a heavy hand in the kibble department, and a few more games of fetch, you’ll have one hot dog on your hands in no time.
