Jeret Peña stirs up your next summer party.

“In my opinion, tequila is misunderstood and underappreciated, but it’s one of the best spirits for cocktails. I love mezcal, too, and I’ve had some really nice cocktails with mezcal and pineapple, so I started there. Then I thought about what else pairs well with tequila and mezcal, and I just kept adding layers. Drinks aren’t one-dimensional to me; I try to add as many different notes as I can without letting one overpower another. Unfortunately, when some people think punch they think of the trash-can variety they had in college. But this is for graduates of that. There’s something so wonderful about sitting around drinking out of a big, beautiful punch bowl.”

Ingredients:

8 ounces tequila

1 ounce mezcal 

3 ounces tawny port 

2 ounces St-Germain elderflower liqueur

6 ounces pineapple juice 

4 ounces water 

2 ounces lime juice

2 ounces simple syrup

10 drops Bittermens Hellfire Habanero Shrub 

cinnamon stick

lime wheel

pineapple wedge

 

Directions:

1. Chill ingredients, then stir together in a punch bowl or pitcher. 

2. Top with grated cinnamon. Garnish with a lime wheel and pineapple wedge. Serves five.
