Books with a female protagonist are 40% more likely to become best sellers.

Simply put, one of the secrets to a successful book is girl power—at least that’s what e-book analytics company Hiptype reports. The startup provides data on everything from what income bracket readers fall into to the pace at which they progress through their reads. Did you know that women are 50 percent more likely to finish a book than men? (For the record, that’s Ladies 2, Gents 0.) Jeremy Greenfield of F+W Media’s Digital Book World thinks such information will help publishers get closer to their customers than ever before. “But,” he says, “I don’t think we’re headed toward a future where books are written by formula.” Sorry, ladies. Looks like you’ll have to put that literary takeover on hold for now.
