Last year, 24.4% of Black Friday shoppers lined up the night before.

Tryptophan is apparently no match for the fiercest of bargain hunters. Last year, 21 million people were made so delirious by the thought of door-buster sales that they couldn’t even wait for Black Friday, according to a National Retail Federation survey. For the first time, many major retailers opened on Thanksgiving night, prompting shoppers to skip the turkey seconds and double up on savings. “Stores have had to find creative ways to get people feeling good about spending again,” says Pam Goodfellow of BIGinsight, which conducted the survey. “The Thursday night sales accomplished that by further promoting the excitement that surrounds Black Friday.” Turns out all that hype really added up, with total spending for the weekend after Thanksgiving topping out at a record $52.4 billion, or $398.62 per shopper. How will this year’s numbers compare? You’ll just have to line up and see.
